According to North Carolina General Statute 113-274 (c)(1)(a), a landowner or a property lessee may kill a bear if it is destroying or harming their property. The kill must be reported to a local wildlife enforcement officer within 24 hours, and the bear must be actively destroying property.
Currently, most forms of baiting are forbidden. While "still hunters" are now prohibited from using bait, hound hunters are permitted to release their dogs at bait sites. There may be more human-bear conflicts as a result of baiting. Baiting trains bears to identify human odors with food and acclimates them to human nutrition.
